Best Temples In Guhagar Near Shantai By The Lake

Guhagar is one of the best beach destinations in Maharashtra. It is known for its beaches, its temples and the sheer green weight of the landscape around it. What surprises most first-time visitors is how many of those temples are genuinely old, genuinely active places of worship rather than restored monuments — and how close together they sit.

Here are the ones worth building a day around, with distances measured from Shantai by the Lake at Patpanhale.

1. Shree Vyadeshwar Temple — 5 km

The spiritual centre of Guhagar and the family deity of a great many Chitpavan Brahmin families across Maharashtra. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and sits on the main road running through Guhagar town, its deepmal — the stone lamp tower — visible well before you reach the gate.

Go early. The morning aarti fills the courtyard, and the cool stone underfoot before the sun gets to it is part of the experience. The complex is well maintained, shaded by old trees, and there is no rush about the place.

2. Durga Devi Temple — 6 km

A short drive from Vyadeshwar and often visited in the same trip. The Durga Devi temple is smaller and quieter, and the surrounding lanes give you a much better sense of everyday Guhagar than the beach road does.

3. Hedvi Ganesh Temple — 20 km

Properly known as the Dashabhuja Ganesh Temple — the ten-armed Ganesha — and carved from a single block of white marble during Peshwa rule. The idol is striking, and the temple has a following that reaches well beyond Ratnagiri district.

Hedvi beach is right there, and it is beautiful. One serious warning: it is not safe for swimming. The currents and the rock shelf make it dangerous, and every year visitors underestimate it. Walk it, photograph it, do not swim it.

While you are in Hedvi, the Bauman Ghal is a ten-minute walk away — a natural gorge about 35 feet long, 2 feet wide and 20 feet deep, where the sea forces spray up through the rock. Avoid it entirely in the monsoon.

4. Velneshwar Temple — 22 km

Around 1,200 years old, sitting directly on a crescent beach ringed with coconut groves. Part of the structure has been claimed by the sea over the centuries, which is exactly what makes it memorable: you seek blessings with the sound of surf arriving from a few metres away.

Velneshwar beach itself is one of the least crowded on this stretch of coast and, unlike Hedvi, is generally calm.

5. Ganpatipule Temple — 75 km

The largest pilgrimage draw in the region, about two hours south. The Ganapati idol here is swayambhu — self-manifested — and is said to have risen from the earth roughly four centuries ago. The temple is unusual in that devotees perform a pradakshina around the entire hill behind it, a walk of about a kilometre.

Sand on one side, evergreen hill on the other. If you are doing a temple circuit from Guhagar, this is the day trip to plan properly rather than squeeze in.

6. Parshuram Mandir, Chiplun — 45 km

A heritage hilltop temple dedicated to Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu, who in local belief created the Konkan coast by driving back the sea. Two routes lead up; take the steps rather than the road. It is only about forty of them, and the food and drink being sold along the way is half the reason to walk.

A practical note on dress and timing: most of these are working temples, so cover shoulders and knees, and expect to leave footwear outside. Mornings are cooler and considerably less crowded. And if you would rather not drive, we can arrange a car for the day from the resort.
