Explore Guhagar Beach And Velneshwar Beach: Places Near Our Resort!

Konkan is one of the most popular tourist regions in Maharashtra, rich with greenery, hill stations, rivers, lakes, waterfalls and a coastline that has stayed remarkably undeveloped. Two beaches near our resort show off very different sides of it: Guhagar, wide and busy with activity, and Velneshwar, quiet and almost entirely local.

Guhagar Beach — 5 km from the resort

Six kilometres of clean sand backed by suru and coconut trees, and comfortably one of the best-kept beaches in Ratnagiri district. The sand here is fine and pale, the slope is gentle, and the tree line means there is actual shade to retreat to — which is not true of most Konkan beaches.

Water sports

Guhagar has become a genuine adventure spot over the last few years. Through the season you will find:

• Jet skiing
• Bumper tube rides
• Banana boat rides
• Snorkelling
• Waterfall rappelling, run from operators in the area
• Coastal boat rides, which work far better for families with small children

Operators set up along the main beach access. Rates are negotiable, life jackets are non-negotiable — insist on one.

Sunset

This is a west-facing coast, so the sunset is the main event. Arrive by about 6 PM, walk north away from the access point, and the crowd thins out within a few hundred metres.

Velneshwar Beach — 22 km from the resort

A completely different proposition. Velneshwar is a crescent of sand ringed by coconut groves, and on most weekdays you will share it with a handful of people. It is often described as a virgin beach, and for once the description holds.

The water here is generally calmer than at Guhagar, and the curve of the bay makes it one of the safer swimming beaches on this coast — though as always in Konkan, stay well within your depth and never swim alone.

Velneshwar Temple

Sitting directly on the shore is a Shiva temple around 1,200 years old, part of which has been taken by the sea over the centuries. Standing in the courtyard with the surf audible a few metres away is a strange and memorable thing, and it is the reason most people who come once come back.

One beach to be careful about

Hedvi beach, 20 km away and beside the well-known Dashabhuja Ganesh Temple, is beautiful and genuinely dangerous. It is not suited to swimming, and attempts to take a dip should be avoided entirely. Enjoy it from the sand.

When to go

October to March is the comfortable window — clear skies, manageable heat, calm sea. The monsoon between June and September turns the whole coast a startling green, but the sea is rough and water sports shut down. Summer, April and May, is hot but has the emptiest beaches of the year.

Shantai by the Lake sits five kilometres from Guhagar beach, which makes an early-morning walk on the sand and a return for breakfast entirely realistic.
